events in dc (9/18) and nyc (9/11)

8 September 2010
I have two events to tell you about, friends.

The first is that I’ll be doing a reading/signing/drinking session in Washington, DC on Saturday, September 18 starting at 6pm at The Brickskeller in Dupont. Ten things to note:

1) I haven’t been to DC since 2001.

2) This bar supposedly has about 1000 beers.

3) The bar opens at 6pm, and we’re meeting right at 6pm, just as they open those doors.

4) At that point, I’ll be out for the night.

5) 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = I don’t intend to walk out without aid.

6) If I’ve learned anything from my Midwest trip, it’s that not all bars are conducive to actual readings.

7) If I can’t actually read you a story, I will happily still accept your free drinks, answer your questions, sign your books, tell you awful secrets about my family (that are not in the book), and more or less rabble-rouse with you.

8) Please bring your friends.

9) There will be no copies of the book for sale at the bar, so get yours now.

10) I have a 10am train reservation on that Sunday so that I can be back in NYC by 1pm the next day to watch the Eagles game with my friends. Your challenge: make me miss that train.

Looking forward to it, and hope all of you in the DC area can make it.

The second event is a sort of mini-reading here in NYC, which will take place this Saturday, September 11 at 6pm at KGB Bar in the East Village. I say “mini-reading” because it’s an event that’s part of Lit Crawl, which is more or less a pub crawl with literature (yes!). The event will be hosted by the hilarious and wonderful Neal Pollack (author of the recently-released STRETCH and reading with me will be the hilarious and delightful Rachel Shukert (author of the recently-released EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE GREAT, which, no, is not the opposite of my memoir).

What’s interesting is that in addition to Neal MCing and Rachel and I reading, there will be lit trivia and prizes. What’s more interesting is that there will be a “girls vs. boys” theme, whereby Rachel will team up with the girls finalist team and I will team up for the boys finalist team for the final round of questions (although not everyone is required to do the trivia, of course). What’s even more interesting is that I was a history major and almost exclusively read books about serial killers, and so couldn’t tell you basic facts of literature like who wrote MADAME BOVARY or name any character in any Charles Dickens novel outside of A CHRISTMAS CAROL or, I don’t know, whatever people should know about literature. So if you come to this event and find me on your team, please, don’t listen to a word I say.

[I should also note that this is a short event – about 45 minutes – and I finally (finally!) have a date set for an “official” NYC reading that I’ll announce soon that will feature a longer reading, Q&A, signing and drinks after. So while I want you to come to both, if you had to pick one to take in all that is me, you should probably come to the longer event. That being said, at KGB I’m still going to get drunk off vodka, read you a story full of cuss words, and, as mentioned, try to sabotage your trivia team (and you get to hear Neal and Rachel, who are way, way better than me), so come on out.]

For more information, you can check out the event description on the Lit Crawl site here.
